Appearance and Personality. At the airport!

Monday & Wednesday 29thSeptember – 1st October, 2014

Hi! How’s your weekend going?

Let’s review what we did in our lessons last week.

We read about the two girls that Richard’s mum and Richard’s friend had chosen for him. We listened to what happened on the dates he had with the girls. He also told us about his choice (=election). It seems that his mother knows him better than his friend! But there was a little inconvenience (problem). He liked that girl, but the girl didn’t like him! Tough! (= bad luck!)
We described some friends. We talked about their appearance, personality and leisure (=free time) activities.

To be like / look like

    ·            What does your father look like?
He’s tall and slim. He’s got short wavy grey hair and green eyes.

    ·            What is he like?
He’s funny and outgoing. He’s sociable and very talkative. But he’s a little mean when you ask him for money!

Look like a…/ like

 ·               She looks about thirty. / You look tired. / He looks American.
 ·               They look like top models. / He looks like an old man. / He looks like a teacher.

Look + adjective, she looks happy.
Look like + noun, she looks like an actress.

To like doing

·                What does he like doing in his free time?
·                He likes swimming and cycling.

Summing up:

Look like, for physical description.
Be + like, for personality and physical description. Also to describe things in general or giving a general opinion on something. (What’s the food like)
Like + -ing, to talk about hobbies or free time activities.

You can revise or learn adjectives to describe appearance on these links: Physical Appearance

And we learnt useful phrases for everyday conversation through a listening.

Mark and Allie are colleagues (they work for the same company). She’s British, he’s American. They met in London because Mark went there on a business trip. They got on well (they liked each other; had a good relationship) and he invited her to go to a conference in the US. Now, Mark is waiting for her at the airport.
We went through “Customs” with Allie and accompany them to her hotel.

We learnt the following expressions:

You look great! How was the flight? You must be really tired! I’m so pleased you came .It’s great to see you again.

We learnt that some words are different in British or American English.
US parking lot / GB Car park

We did a lot of things! Enjoy the rest of Sunday because tomorrow we’ll start working hard again!
See you tomorrow!
