Adverbs of Frequency. Pronunciation of "s"

Monday & Wednesday 6th- 8thOctober, 2014

Hello! How are you doing?

We’re having a rainy weekend! And we will probably have a rainy week!

What did we learnt last week?  We revised adverbs and expressions of frequency.
Remember the position of adverbs of frequency:

Before the main verb
Danny hardly ever does housework.
George never goes to the dentist.
Mary usually does sport or exercise.
After the verb “to be”
Christine is never at home in the morning.

In questions, after the subject.
Is Liza often late for work?
Do you often buy flowers?

Expressions of frequency, at the end of the sentence.
Steve goes to the hairdresser’s twice a year.
Christian goes on holiday three times a year.
Miranda  sees her best friend every weekend.

We read and talk about sharing flats.

We both agreed that it’s really important to choose the perfect flat mates. The difference between choosing the people you are going to share a flat with, right or wrong is that your sharing experience becomes perfect or a nightmare!
We started talking about sports.
We learnt which sports are used after go, play and do.

Can you think of more sports to complete the chart?

Go
Do
Play

I’m sure you know more sports tan me…even the rules; but do you know so many in English? Here you are some links on vocabulary on sports!!

We practised pronunciation of different “S” sounds.
Plurals or present simple, 3rd person singular (he, she, it)
‘s’ is pronounced /s/ after /k,p,f,t/ walks, stops, laughs, eats
‘es’ is pronounced /Iz/ after /tʃ/ churches /s/ dresses /ʃ/(sh) washes /ʤ/ bridges.
In all other cases the final‘s’ is pronounced /z/ plays, parties etc.

We also practised the pronunciation of /ʃ/ shower and /ʒ/ television
Pronunciation /s/ /z/

And that was all! We’ll continue tomorrow!
See you!

Appearance and Personality. At the airport!

Monday & Wednesday 29thSeptember – 1st October, 2014

Hi! How’s your weekend going?

Let’s review what we did in our lessons last week.

We read about the two girls that Richard’s mum and Richard’s friend had chosen for him. We listened to what happened on the dates he had with the girls. He also told us about his choice (=election). It seems that his mother knows him better than his friend! But there was a little inconvenience (problem). He liked that girl, but the girl didn’t like him! Tough! (= bad luck!)
We described some friends. We talked about their appearance, personality and leisure (=free time) activities.

To be like / look like

    ·            What does your father look like?
He’s tall and slim. He’s got short wavy grey hair and green eyes.

    ·            What is he like?
He’s funny and outgoing. He’s sociable and very talkative. But he’s a little mean when you ask him for money!

Look like a…/ like

 ·               She looks about thirty. / You look tired. / He looks American.
 ·               They look like top models. / He looks like an old man. / He looks like a teacher.

Look + adjective, she looks happy.
Look like + noun, she looks like an actress.

To like doing

·                What does he like doing in his free time?
·                He likes swimming and cycling.

Summing up:

Look like, for physical description.
Be + like, for personality and physical description. Also to describe things in general or giving a general opinion on something. (What’s the food like)
Like + -ing, to talk about hobbies or free time activities.

You can revise or learn adjectives to describe appearance on these links: Physical Appearance

And we learnt useful phrases for everyday conversation through a listening.

Mark and Allie are colleagues (they work for the same company). She’s British, he’s American. They met in London because Mark went there on a business trip. They got on well (they liked each other; had a good relationship) and he invited her to go to a conference in the US. Now, Mark is waiting for her at the airport.
We went through “Customs” with Allie and accompany them to her hotel.

We learnt the following expressions:

You look great! How was the flight? You must be really tired! I’m so pleased you came .It’s great to see you again.

We learnt that some words are different in British or American English.
US parking lot / GB Car park

We did a lot of things! Enjoy the rest of Sunday because tomorrow we’ll start working hard again!
See you tomorrow!
